Maryam Muwwakkil
Executive Director and Founder
Maryam@starinitiatives.org
Maryam Muwwakkil is the founder and Executive Director of STAR Initiatives, a nonprofit organization dedicated to holistic development and empowerment in underserved communities. A native of Jamaica, Queens, Maryam’s diverse career journey reflects her commitment to community upliftment and creating pathways for success.
Maryam’s professional journey began as a court reporter, where she earned an Associate’s degree in Court Reporting and Stenography. She worked in the field for eight years, honing her skills in communication and attention to detail. However, her entrepreneurial spirit led her to open a bar and restaurant, where she spent ten years building her business and learning the ins and outs of leadership and community engagement. After selling the restaurant, Maryam transitioned into real estate, gaining valuable experience that further shaped her understanding of business and community dynamics. While her entrepreneurial career flourished, Maryam’s passion for nurturing others led her to explore acting, and she added IMDb credits to her portfolio. But through all of this, she realized that her true calling was in helping people, particularly the next generation, break free from limitations and trauma.
Having witnessed firsthand how most violence prevention efforts occur after the trauma has already set in—after the arrests, the funerals, and the damage—Maryam founded STAR Initiatives to offer a proactive and responsive approach to community healing. STAR focuses on mindset development, resilience, and holistic support, preventing trauma before it happens, while also offering intervention for those already impacted. With STAR Initiatives, Maryam’s goal is to break cycles of generational trauma while creating pathways to generational wealth. She believes that every individual has unique potential, and true success comes from building confidence, resilience, and holistic growth, which are the cornerstones of the STAR approach. At the heart of it all is STAR Power—the belief that, when individuals tap into their inner strength and potential, they can transform their lives and communities for good.
