Maryam Muwwakkil

Executive Director and Founder

Maryam@starinitiatives.org

Maryam Muwwakkil is the visionary founder whose unwavering passion drives the mission of S.T.A.R. Initiatives. Her journey encompasses a diverse range of experiences, from entrepreneurship and real estate to hospitality and event management, instilling in her a deep appreciation for the complexities of life. These different life chapters have ignited her strong commitment to taking a well-rounded approach in her work with young minds.
An avid entrepreneur with a rich tapestry of experiences, Maryam’s true calling materialized when she recognized that genuine fulfillment lies in nurturing the next generation and leaving an indelible mark on their lives. This realization led her to establish S.T.A.R. Initiatives, an organization dedicated to empowering youth through holistic growth and development.

A native of Jamaica, Queens, Maryam understands firsthand the challenges faced by underserved communities. Growing up, she experienced the lack of resources and support, igniting her passion for uplifting these neighborhoods. It’s this passion that led her to create S.T.A.R. Initiatives, a beacon of hope for youth in need.
Maryam’s journey began as a stenographer, and she leveraged her skills to build a career in real estate. She also ventured into the hospitality industry as the owner of a bar and restaurant with an event space. Through it all, her commitment to empowering young minds remained unwavering.

Recognizing that every child learns differently and needs tailored support to excel, Maryam’s goal was to provide a curriculum that respects these differences. She firmly believes that education should be as unique as each student, rejecting a one-size-fits-all approach. Her mantra is, “Our youth are not cookie cutters; each child learns differently and deserves a customized path to excellence.” This philosophy underlines the core of S.T.A.R. Initiatives, where a holistic approach to education is paramount.
With this vision, Maryam personally crafted a range of programs and curriculums that extend beyond traditional academics. Her dedication to fostering confidence and empowerment in young minds is evident in every facet of S.T.A.R. Initiatives. The organization’s mission is to illuminate pathways of opportunity by embracing and celebrating the unique potential of every student.
